Walking out the front door was all that was needed to know that things had gone south, real fast. Although the barn was at least 300 yards or so away, I could hear screaming and a scuffle taking place, causing dirt to fly. The horses were all in a tizzy, letting out distressed neighs. Autumn took off in a full sprint with some kind of sixth sense all dogs seem to possess. I looked for Lukeâs goliath stature, but he was nowhere to be seen. It was out of my hands right now, but I was hoping with everything that I had that he wasnât the one in the scuffle. My Dadâs funeral was set to take place in three days, and I didnât need the extra hassle of dealing with the aftermath of Lukeâs temper.
With Quinnâs hand in mine, we cautiously made our way over to the barn. Standing around in a circle, the deputies were whooping it up and having a good old time, like they were watching a pig race at the county fair. I half expected them to be taking bets on the outcome that was going on before our eyes. There were no pigs racing, and, instead, I saw Luke and Osborne rolling around throwing punch after punch. Luke was not a young man anymore, and I feared for the outcome. Appalled at the audacity of the situation, I searched the crowd for Lux, needing answers immediately. All I could see were deputies acting like children, forgetting that they were men of the law.
I looked down at Quinnâshe, too, was wearing a look of disgust. âHave you seen Lux?â I inquired. A shrug of her shoulders told me all I needed to know. I tapped a deputy on the shoulder, asking politely if he could please get this fight under control. The response I got angered me even more. He sneered at me and said, âAre you out of your mind? This is the most fun Iâve had since Uncle Bob fell off the ladder while hanging Christmas lights.â This guy was a bundle of laughs, not to mention not the least bit concerned.
For some strange reason, I felt very protective of Quinn and didnât want her to be a part of this male machismo at its worst, so I walked her over to the back side of the barn, where we were somewhat out of sight. We were definitely not out of noise range, as cheers erupted, encouraging Osborne to kick Luke in the balls and put an end to him once and for all. I didnât like the sound of that in the least, and it was out of hand. I pleaded with Quinn to stay put, and I promised that I would return momentarily. She could see how distressed I was and agreed without so much as an inkling of an argument. God bless her.
As I rounded the corner, I ran smack dab into Lux. I had never been so happy to see anybody in my whole life.
